Knopf, Adolph (1882–1966) geologist; born in San Francisco. He worked with the U.S. Geological Survey (1906–45) while concurrently teaching at Yale (1920–51). He then became a visiting professor at Stanford (1951–57). He made major contributions to mineralogy and mining, radioisotopic geochronology, and igneous petrology as exemplified by investigations of the Boulder batholith in Montana. |
