In southeastern KY; organized May 5, 1884 from Floyd, Letcher, Perry, and Breathitt counties. Name Origin: For James Proctor Knott (1830-1911), KY legislator, U.S. representative (1867-71; 1875-83), and governor (1883-87).

Area (sq mi): 353.01 (land 352.19; water 0.82). Pop per sq mi: 49.90.
Pop 2005: 17,561. State rank: 63. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.50%; 1990-2000 -1.40%. Pop 2000: 17,649 (White 97.80%; Black or African American 0.70%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.20%; Other 0.80%). Foreign born: 0.40%. Median age: 35.90.
Income 2000: per capita $11,297; median household $20,373; Pop below poverty level: 31.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $15,977-$17,092.

The company plans to partially mitigate the effects of this production shortfall by transferring equipment that is unable to be efficiently utilized at the Sunny Ridge Mine to the Starfire Mine in Knott County, Kentucky, increasing that mine's output by approximately 40,000 tons per month.
