Knox, Alfred William 

Born Oct. 30, 1870; died Mar. 9, 1964. English general. Member of the Conservative Party.

Knox graduated from the Royal Military College in 1891 and from a staff college in 1905, after which he served on the General Staff and in the Ministry of War. He was a military attaché at the British embassy in Russia from 1911 to 1918. Knox was with the Russian field forces during World War I (1914–18). From 1918 to 1920 he was head of the British military mission in Siberia. In November 1918, Knox participated in the establishment of Admiral A. V. Kolchak’s dictatorship. Knox was in charge of supplies shipped from Great Britain for Kolchak’s army; he created a school staffed with British instructors to train officers. Knox’ memoirs contain factual materials about the Russian Army’s involvement in World War I.
