He was a military attaché at the British embassy in Russia from 1911 to 1918. Knox was with the Russian field forces during World War I (1914–18). From 1918 to 1920 he was head of the British military mission in Siberia. In November 1918, Knox participated in the establishment of Admiral A. V. Kolchak’s dictatorship.
