Kochi, city, Japan

Kochi (kō`chē), city (1990 pop. 317,069), capital of Kochi prefecture, S Shikoku, Japan. From its port, Urado, the city exports dried bonito, ornamental coral, cement, and paper. Kochi prefecture (1990 pop. 825,063), 2,743 sq mi (7,104 sq km), is a mountainous region with fertile coastal plains. Agricultural tools and machinery are produced there.

Kochi 

a prefecture in Japan, in the southern part of the island of Shikoku. Area, 7,100 sq km; population, 787,000 (1970), more than half urban. The prefecture’s capital is the city of Kochi.

Economically, Kochi is one of the poorly developed agrarian prefectures of the country. The cultivated lands occupy 129,500 hectares. Kochi is almost the only region of the country that grows two crops of rice a year (in 1970 about 100,000 tons of rice were harvested). Market gardening and hothouse vegetable raising (cucumbers and cayenne) are prevalent. Fishing is an important occupation (in 1969 the catch was 102,000 tons). Deposits of copper (Shirotaki) and chromites (Izo and Nagano) are exploited.

In 1969, 21,200 people were employed in the manufacturing industry, which consisted primarily of small-scale enterprises. Kochi’s industries include glass and ceramics, paper, and general machine building. The city of Kochi is the principal industrial center.
