Koenigswald, Gustaf von
Born Nov. 13, 1902, in Berlin. Dutch geologist, paleontologist, and anthropologist. From 1935 to 1941, Koenigswald led expeditions to the island of Java, where he found skulls and other bone fragments of Pithecanthropus and Meganthropus. In 1935 he was the first to discover and describe Gigantopithecus. Koenigswald’s main works deal with the evolution of teeth, general questions of the philogeny of primates and humans, fossil hominids, and other theoretical problems of anthropogenesis.
