Location:15 miles north of Kekaha on Kokee Road (Highway 550).
Facilities:Housekeeping cabins, campground, picnic areas, trails, scenic lookouts, public hunting area, food concession, museum.
Activities:Tent and trailer camping, hiking, nature study, pig hunting, trout fishing (seasonal), plum picking (seasonal).
Special Features:Park adjoins Waimea Canyon State Park (see separate entry) and offers spectacular views of lush Kalalau Valley from a lookout at 4,000 feet elevation. The park is an excellent area for learning about native plants and rain forest birds.

There was a single Trematalobelia, an 8-15 foot tall forest plant that looks somewhat like a red-flowered yucca, growing in a colony in Kokee State Park some time ago.
I am standing on the serpentine Awaawapuhi Trail in Kauai's upland Kokee State Park, dodging clouds and catching ocean views.
The study site is located in the Na Pali-Kona Forest Reserve in Kokee State Park, island of Kauai, Hawaii (22 [degrees]08[minutes] N and 159 [degrees]38[minutes] W) at 1134 m elevation.
Cool, often drizzly Kokee State Park above Waimea Canyon offers some of Kauai's most dramatic and varied rainforest hiking.

While the west coast of Kauai is strikingly arid, you'll be near the wettest spot on the planet if you turn up County 550 and follow the steep, winding road 19 miles along the edge of Waimea Canyon to its end in Kokee State Park.
Cabins: Barely a cut above camping, the 12 rustic housekeeping cabins ($35 to $45) at Kokee Lodge (335-6061) in Kokee State Park are a base for hikers.

Surprisingly, wind damage at Kokee State Park was less than that caused by Hurricane Iwa, which closed trails in the park and along the north shore's Na Pali Coast for months.
The road continues into 4,345-acre Kokee State Park and ends with Kalalau Lookout's view of the rugged Na Pali coast.
Hikes twice a month on Saturday or Sunday to Kokee State Park, Sleeping Giant country, or the island's north side.
