Kolenkovskii, Aleksandr Konstantinovich 

Born Aug. 23 (Sept. 4), 1880, in Nikolaev; died May 23, 1942, in Moscow. Soviet military historian; lieutenant general (1940); professor. Member of the CPSU from 1940. Son of an officer.

Kolenkovskii graduated from the Odessa Infantry Junker School in 1900 and from the Academy of the General Staff in 1912. After serving in World War I (1914–18) as a lieutenant colonel, he volunteered for the Red Army in April 1918. From September 1918 to May 1919 he was chief of staff of the Eastern Front and then military leader of the Volga Military District. He was military attaché in Lithuania in 1920–21 and chief of the Operations Directorate of Staff Headquarters of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army from 1921 to 1924. Kolenkovskii taught at the M. V. Frunze Military Academy from 1924. His main works are on the history of World War I.
