Kolff, Willem J. (Johan) (1911– ) surgeon, inventor; born in Leiden, Holland. Educated in Holland, where he taught and practiced medicine, he emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1950. He is the acknowledged inventor of the artificial kidney dialysis machine, and he headed the team that invented and tested a soft-shell artificial heart.
