Kolín (kô`lēn), city (1991 pop. 31,595), central Czech Republic, in Bohemia, on the Elbe (Labe) River. It is a river port with metal and chemical industries; automobiles are produced nearby. The city also has a petroleum refinery and a hydroelectric station. Founded in the 13th cent., Kolín grew rapidly after the construction (19th cent.) of the Vienna-Prague railway. The 13th-century Church of St. Bartholomew is noted for its Gothic choir. How to thank TFD for its existence?
