Komarovskii, Aleksandr Nikolaevich 

Born May 7 (20), 1906, in St. Petersburg. Soviet military figure; general in the army (1972); Hero of Socialist Labor (1949); doctor of engineering sciences (1956). Member of the CPSU since 1939.

Komarovskii graduated from the Moscow Institute of Transportation Engineers in 1928. In the 1930’s he held responsible positions in the construction of the Moscow Canal and the Kuibyshev Hydroengineering Complex and in several people’s commissariats. In the Southern and Southwestern fronts during the Great Patriotic War (1941–45), Komarovskii was chief of the defense works administration, commander of the Fifth Combat Engineer Army, and deputy chief of the Main Directorate of Defense Construction of the People’s Commissariat of Defense. He held various leadership positions from 1942 to 1962; in December 1963 he became deputy minister of defense of the USSR in charge of construction and quartering troops.

Komarovskii’s main works are on hydroengineering and general construction. He was a deputy to the eighth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He received the State Prize of the USSR (1951) and the Lenin Prize (1968). He has been awarded seven Orders of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of the Patriotic War First Class, two Orders of the Red Star, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and various medals, as well as several orders and medals from foreign states. Komarovskii is the author of the book Notes of a Builder (1972).
