(until 1931, Alchevsk; 1931–61, Voroshilovsk), a city in Voroshilovgrad Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Population, 125,000 (1972). Kommunarsk is a railway station on the Voroshilovgrad-Debal’tsevo line. The city is one of the major metallurgical centers of the Donbas. It has a metallurgical plant (completely reconstructed and expanded during the years of Soviet power), a coking by-products plant, and a plant producing building structures (the last two appeared with the five-year plans). Kommunarsk has a mining and metallurgical institute and an industrial technicum. The city came into being in 1895 in connection with the construction of the metallurgical plant.
