Kondouriotis, Paul (kônd ryô`tĭs), 1857–1935, Greek admiral and statesman. He became a national hero through his victories over the Turkish fleet in the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 and in the Balkan Wars of 1912–13. He was regent after the death (1920) of King Alexander and again after the departure (1923) of King George II from Greece. In 1924 he was elected president of the newly formed Greek republic, and remained at that post until 1929, except for a few months in 1926 when the brief dictatorship of General Theodore Pangalos forced him to resign. The name also appears as Koundouriotis. How to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit webmaster's page for free fun content. |
