Name Origin: Origin uncertain, but evidence points to a Cree Indian word meaning 'rainy lake,' descriptive of the mists from the nearby International Falls on Rainy River. Area (sq mi): 3154.32 (land 3102.36; water 51.96). Pop per sq mi: 4.50. Pop 2005: 13,907. State rank: 59. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.10%; 1990-2000 -11.90%. Pop 2000: 14,355 (White 95.70%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.20%; Other 3.60%). Foreign born: 5.90%. Median age: 41.50.
