On the western border of the ID panhandle, east of Spokane, WA; original county; organized Dec 22, 1864 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the Kootenai (or Kutenai) Indian tribe, whose name means 'water people.'

Area (sq mi): 1315.69 (land 1245.12; water 70.57). Pop per sq mi: 102.50.
Pop 2005: 127,668. State rank: 3. Pop change: 2000-20005 17.50%; 1990-2000 55.70%. Pop 2000: 108,685 (White 94.40%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 2.30%; Asian 0.50%; Other 3.50%). Foreign born: 2.40%. Median age: 36.10.
Income 2000: per capita $18,430; median household $37,754; Pop below poverty level: 10.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,012-$24,805.
