Koretskii, Vladimir Mikhailovich 

Born Feb. 5 (17), 1890, in Ekaterinoslav, present-day Dnepropetrovsk. Soviet lawyer, specialist in international law and the history of the state and law. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1948).

From 1919 to 1941 and again from 1944 to 1949, Koretskii headed the Sector of State and Law of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukranian SSR. (In 1970 the sector was reorganized as the Institute of State and Law.) He was a member of the Soviet delegation to the UN General Assembly in 1946, 1947, and 1949 and participated in the work of various international conferences and commissions of the UN. In 1957 he was appointed to the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and from 1961 to 1970 he was a member of the UN International Court of Justice, serving as its vice-president from 1967 to 1970. He joined the Mexican Academy of International Law in 1969. Koretskii was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
