Kornaros, Themos

    0.01 sec.
Kornaros, Themos

Born May 1, 1909, in the village of Siva-Mesaras, on Crete; died Dec. 10, 1970, in Athens. Greek writer.

Kornaros began his literary career in 1932 with the story The First Day at the Plant, and his subsequent works dealt with sharp social conflicts. In 1945, Kornaros published the documentary novel The Chandari Concentration Camp, written in prison. (With the exception of several brief intervals, he had spent almost 20 years in prisons, exile, and concentration camps.) The novel was an indictment of fascism and a paean to the men and women of the Resistance, led by the communists. Kornaros’ last work, the novel History of a Generation (1963), attests to his mastery of realism. After his visit to the USSR and several other socialist countries in 1959, he wrote a series of articles for the newspaper, Auge affirming his fervent belief in the new man and the new life.
