Korostovtsev, Mikhail Aleksandrovich 

Born Apr. 10 (23), 1900, in the village of Popovka in what is now Verkhnedneprovsk Raion, Dnepropetrovsk Oblast. Soviet Egyptologist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1974). Member of the CPSU since 1929.

Between 1924 and 1934, Korostovtsev was first a sailor and then a long-voyage navigator. In 1934 he completed the correspondence courses of the history department of the Azerbaijan University. From 1935 to 1941 he was a research worker and scientific secretary of the Leningrad branch of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. From 1943 to 1965 he was a senior research worker (from 1943 to 1947 he worked in Egypt and the Sudan). In 1965 he became head of the ancient East department of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He is the author of numerous works on the history of the countries of the ancient East, particularly on the philology and history of ancient Egypt. Korostovtsev is an honorary doctor of the Egyptology Institute of Charles University (1965) and a member of the French Society of Egyptology (1958).
