Korotkov, Aleksei Andreevich 

Born Feb. 12 (25), 1910, in Osa, present-day Perm’ Oblast; died Feb 5, 1967, in Leningrad. Soviet organic chemist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958). Hero of Socialist Labor (1963). Became a member of the CPSU in 1942. After graduating from the Leningrad Institute of Chemical Engineering in 1931, he worked in plants producing synthetic rubber. He conducted research at the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Synthetic Rubber (beginning in 1945) and the Institute of Macromolecular Compounds (beginning in 1953).

Korotkov’s main research was devoted to the study of catalytic polymerization in unsaturated compounds, the synthesis of isoprene rubber of regular structure, and the study of the mechanism of polymerization. He was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1967 for his participation in a series of studies on the creation of stereoregular rubber and the technology of its industrial preparation. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.
