Korzhenevskii, Nikolai Leopol’dovich
Born Feb. 6 (18), 1879, in the village of Zaverezh’e, Nevel’ District, Vitebsk Province; died Oct. 31, 1958, in Tashkent. Soviet physical geographer and glaciologist; doctor of geographic sciences (1937); Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR (1947); Honored Scientist of the Uzbek SSR (1939). Korzhenevskii was a professor and head of the subdepartment of physical geography at the Middle Asian University (from 1937). He did research on physical geography, in particular the glaciation of Middle Asia. He compiled a catalog of the glaciers of Middle Asia (1930) and discovered and studied approximately 70 large glaciers and a number of mountain peaks. Three glaciers have been named in honor of Korzhenevskii (in the Zaalai Range, the Kokshaltau Range, and the Zailiiskii Alatau), as well as a peak in the Zaalai Range in Middle Asia.
