Kosov, Silvestr

    0.01 sec.
Kosov, Sil’vestr

Date of birth unknown; died April 23 (May 3), 1657, in Kiev. Metropolitan of Kiev (from 1647); ecclesiastical writer.

In his writings, Kosov spoke out against the Brest Union of 1596 and called for the equalization of rights for the Orthodox clergy vis-á-vis the Catholic. In the late 1640’s and the 1650’s he led the opposition of the upper Ukrainian clergy to the reunification of the Ukraine with Russia and also opposed the subordination of the metropolitanate of Kiev to the patriarch of Moscow.
