Kostov, Doncho Stoianov 

Born June 19, 1897, in Lokorsko (near Sofia); died Aug. 9, 1949, in Sofia. Bulgarian biologist; member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1946) and the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Yugoslavia (1948). Member of the Bulgarian Communist Party since 1944.

Kostov graduated from the University of Halle in 1924. He worked at the Institute of Genetics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1932 to 1939 and as a professor at Leningrad University from 1934 to 1936. He became director of the Central Agricultural Research Institute in Sofia in 1939, a professor at the University of Sofia in 1946, and director of the Institute of Applied Biology and Development of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1947. Kostov’s main works dealt with remote hybridization, experimental polyploidy, heterosis, plant immunobiology, and the cytogenetics and evolution of species of tobacco.
