Kota (kō`tə), city (1991 pop. 537,371), Rajasthan state, NW India, on the Chambal River. Kota, enclosed by a massive wall, is a district administrative center and a market for sugarcane, oilseed, and building stone. The city has an airport; the nearby Chambal Dam supplies the city with hydroelectric power for its diversified industries. Kota has manufactures in textiles, precision instruments, electric cable, rubber products, paper, and processed foods. The Mathureshi temple is the most famous of Kota's many temples.

Kota 

a city in northwestern India, in the state of Rajasthan, on the Chambal River. Population, 213,000 (1971). Kota is a transportation junction. The city is the center of complex hydropower construction work on the Chambal and a growing industrial center. It has chemical and machine-building industries, including a precision instruments factory, the first line of which went into operation in 1968; it was built with the aid of the USSR.


Kota 

a small tribe (approximately 1,000 persons) in India. They live in several villages in the Nilgiri Hills (Madras State). Their language—Kota—is related to the Dravidian languages. They worship spirit-protectors. Some vestiges of primitive communal relations are preserved. The Kota are divided into exogamous groups. There is a patrilineal system of inheritance and a number of restrictions for women. The chief occupation is handicrafts; they also farm (primarily vegetable gardening) and raise some livestock.
