Kotwicz, Wladyslaw

Kotwicz, Władysław 

(Kotvich, Vladislav Liudvigovich). Born Mar. 20, 1872, in the village of Ossowie, in the Vilnius region; died Oct. 3, 1944, in the village of Czarny Borze, near Vilnius. Russian and Polish Orientalist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1923), member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and president of the Polish Oriental Society (1922–36).

Kotwicz graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1895, where he subsequently taught Mongolian (1900–03) and Kalmyk and Manchu (1903–23). He made many trips to Kalmykia to study Kalmyk dialects and subdialects. Kotwicz was the first director of the Petrograd Institute of Living Oriental Languages (1920–22), and from 1923 to 1940 he was a professor at the subdepartment of Oriental languages at the University of L’vov. From 1927 he edited the journal Rocznik Orientalistyczny.
