Kouvola

Kouvola, city (1996 pop. 31,986), located in Kymen prov., SE Finland. It is an important railroad junction on the line running from St. Petersburg to Helsinki and a transportation center for goods heading toward both Asia and Europe. The site of Finland's largest railyard, it is also a distribution point for the Vyborg-Finland natural-gas pipeline. The city is a paper-milling, pulp-producing, and printing center and has a strong industrial engineering sector. Kouvola's educational institutions include a music college and a business economics institute.

The University of Helsinki Translation Studies Department in Kouvola teaches translation from English, Russian, German and Swedish into and out of Finnish.
He graduated as architect from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1963, and after collaborating initially with Bertel Saarnio on Kouvola Town Hall has been in practice on his own since 1967, over the last 17 years in partnership with Vilhelm Helander.
