Coimbatore (kwĭmbətôr`), city (1991 pop. 1,000,746), Tamil Nadu state, SE India. Commanding the eastern approach to the Palghat Gap, the major pass through the Western Ghats, it was important in the wars of Haidar Ali Haidar Ali or Hyder Ali , 1722–82, Indian ruler. A Muslim of peasant stock, he rose by military brilliance to command the army of the Hindu state of Mysore.

 and Tippoo Sahib. The British obtained undisputed possession of Coimbatore in 1799. The city is a district administrative center and a junction of rail lines linking India's east and west coasts. It is the second most industrialized region of Tamil Nadu state, manufacturing processed foods, cotton, and transport equipment. Coimbatore is also a market for tea, cotton, cardamom, cinchona, and teak.

a city in India in the state of Tamil Nadu on the Kongu Nadu plateau. Population, 353,500 (1971). Coimbatore is a large center for the textile industry. (Cotton is grown locally.) Textile machinery and electric motors are produced, and there are food, chemical, cement, and film enterprises. The Pykara hydroelectric power station is in Coimbatore. The city has one of India’s largest agricultural colleges.
