Kozin, Sergei Andreevich 

Born Oct. 7 (19), 1879, in Tuapse, in present-day Krasnodar Krai; died Oct. 16, 1956, in Leningrad. Soviet expert in Mongolian culture. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1943).

Kozin graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1903. From 1914 to 1918 he worked in Autonomous Mongolia as a financial adviser to the Mongolian government. In the 1920’s he helped create the Oriental Institute in Leningrad. In 1929 he began teaching Mongolian at the institute and at Leningrad University.

Kozin was the author of a number of works, including The Secret Tale: The Mongol Chronicle of 1240 (1941). He also did translations of and commentaries on the Mongol epic Geseriada (1935), the Kalmyk epic Dzhangariada (1940), and The Epos of the Mongolian Peoples (1948). These works provide rich and varied material on the way of life, the social and political structure, and the culture and language of the Mongolian peoples.
