Kozlovskii, Aleksei Fedorovich 

Born Oct. 2(15), 1905, in Kiev. Soviet composer and conductor. People’s Artist of the Uzbek SSR (1955).

In 1931, Kozlovskii completed his training at the Moscow Conservatory, where he had studied composition under N. la. Miaskovskii. From 1931 to 1933 he was a conductor at the K. S. Stanislavsky Opera Theater in Moscow. In 1936 he began working in Tashkent. Since 1949 he has been the principal conductor and artistic director of the Uzbek Symphony Orchestra. In 1944, Kozlovskii became an instructor at the Tashkent Conservatory, receiving a professorship there in 1958. His pupils have included D. Zakirov, G. Zubatov, and D. Saatkulov. Kozlovskii wrote the opera Ulugbek (staged in 1942; a new version, 1958), the musical dramas Davronata (in collaboration with T. Sadykov, produced in 1941) and Sherali (in collaboration with S. N. Vasilenko and M. Ashrafi, produced in 1942), the ballets Glory to October (1947) and Tanovar (also known as The Oriole, 1969), and a number of vocal and symphonic works. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
