Kozolupov, Semen Matveevich 

Born Apr. 10 (22), 1884, in the stanitsa (large cossack village) of Krasnokholmskaia, now the settlement of Krasnokholmskii in the Bashkir ASSR; died Apr. 18, 1961, in Moscow. Soviet cellist and teacher. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1946). A founder of the Soviet cello school. Doctor of the arts (1941).

Kozolupov received his musical education at the St. Petersburg Conservatory (1904–07). He played in the quartet of the Moscow Division of the Russian Society of Music and in chamber music ensembles with such musicians as S. I. Taneev, K. N. Igumnov, and A. B. Gol’denveizer. From 1908 to 1912 and again from 1924 to 1931 he was a soloist with the orchestra of the Bolshoi Theater. He taught at the Saratov Conservatory from 1912 to 1916 and from 1920 to 1921, the Kiev Conservatory from 1916 to 1920, and the Moscow Conservatory from 1922 to 1961 (from 1923 as professor). Among his students were A. K Vlasov, L. S. Ginzburg, S. N. Knushevitskii, G. S. Kozolupova, F. P. Luzanov, B. M. Reentovich, M. L. Rostropovich, and V. la. Feigin. Kozolupov was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.
