Kraevskii, Andrei Aleksandrovich

    0.01 sec.
Kraevskii, Andrei Aleksandrovich

Born Feb. 5 (17), 1810, in Moscow; died Aug. 8 (20), 1889, in Pavlovsk. Russian publisher and journalist.

Kraevskii graduated from Moscow University in 1828. From 1839 to 1867 he published the journal Otechestvennye zapiski (Notes of the Fatherland), attracting the best writers to it, including V. G. Belinskii. Belinskii broke with Kraevskii in 1846, and the journal gradually lost its progressive direction. After 1848, Kraevskii held openly conservative positions. He edited a number of newspapers.

Kraevskii proved to be an able administrator as a publisher, but was reputed to exploit his literary contributors for personal gain. His moderate liberal newspaper Golos (Voice; 1863–84) was particularly popular.
