Kraljević, Miroslav
Born Dec. 14, 1885, in Gospic; died Apr. 16, 1913, in Zagreb. Croatian painter and graphic artist; one of the founders of the 20th-century Croatian school of painting. Between 1907 and 1911, Kraljević studied at the Academy of Arts in Munich. In 1911 he attended the Académic de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. His works reflect the influence of G. Courbet, W. Leibl, and E. Manet. Kraljević’s portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and animal scenes, which were executed in a free and energetic manner, are marked by a deep understanding of the model or subject, concise pictorial expression, a restrained palette, and hidden inner tension.
