Kramer, Paul J. (Jackson) (1903– ) plant physiologist; born in Brookville, Ind. He was an assistant botanist at Ohio State University (1928–31), then moved to Duke (1931–74), continuing his research and writing after retirement. A pioneer in the physiology of woody plants, especially of the southern U.S.A., he made major contributions to studies of the relationship between plants and water, including investigations of transpiration and salt transfer, root structure, and water stress, both in nature and in the controlled environment known as the phytotron.
