Krasnoyarsk

Krasnoyarsk (krəsnəyärsk`), city (1989 pop. 913,000), capital of Krasnoyarsk Territory, W Siberian Russia, on the Yenisei River. A major river port and rail center, it has industries producing heavy equipment for the Trans-Siberian RR, building and mining equipment, and farm and shipbuilding machinery. There are also plants producing chemicals, aluminum, wood products, and synthetic rubber. There is a large hydroelectric plant on the Yenisei at Krasnoyarsk. Founded in 1628 as the Cossack outpost of Krasny Yar, it grew rapidly after the discovery of gold and the construction of the Trans-Siberian RR (late 19th cent.). Krasnoyarsk is the seat of the Siberian Institute of Forestry.

Krasnoyarsk

City (pop., 2002: 911,700), east-central Russia. Located on the upper Yenisey River, it was founded by Cossacks in 1628. In the late 17th century, it was often attacked by the Tatars and Kirghiz. The Trans-Siberian Railroad brought a period of rapid growth in the 1890s. A commercial and industrial centre, it is the site of one of the world's largest hydroelectric stations, built in the 1960s.
