Kreiter, Vladimir Mikhailovich 

Born Oct. 24 (Nov. 5), 1897, in Kuznetsk, present-day Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo Oblast; died Dec. 31, 1966, in Moscow. Soviet geologist. Doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences (1940). Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1964). Professor (1935).

Kreiter graduated from the Leningrad Mining Institute in 1928. He taught at the Moscow Institute of Geological Research from 1932 to 1949 and the Moscow Institute of Nonferrous Metals and Gold from 1932 to 1949 and from 1954 to 1966. In 1962 he became head of the subdepartment of ore deposits and their exploration at the P. Lumumba Peoples Friendship University. He is one of the founders of the theory of searching for and analyzing mineral deposits in the USSR. Kreiter developed a classification of commercial types of deposits and worked out geological prospecting criteria. He also produced a system of grouping deposits for purposes of exploration which has become the theoretical basis for the development of exploratory and comprehensive analytical work in various regions of the USSR.
