Kremlev, Iulii Anatol’evich 

Born June 6 (19), 1908, in Essentuki; died Feb. 19, 1971, in Leningrad. Soviet musicologist, pianist, and composer; Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1957); doctor of art studies (1963).

At the Leningrad Conservatory, Kremlev studied piano under M. V. ludina (1925–28), graduated in 1933 in history and theory, and went on to the graduate program under B. V. Asaf’ev. In 1937 he became a research assistant (from 1942 senior re-search assistant) of the Leningrad Institute of Theater, Music, and Cinematography; he was director of the music division (1957–69) and professor from 1969. Kremlev’s chief works are devoted to various problems of the history of Russian, Soviet, and foreign music and to music theory and aesthetics; a number of his books have been translated into foreign languages. He also composed music.
