Kripiakevich, Ivan Petrovich 

Born June 25 (July 7), 1886, in L’vov; died there April 21, 1967. Soviet historian. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1958) and Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR (1961).

In 1908, Kripiakevich graduated from the University of L’vov and in 1911 became a member of the history and philosophy section of the T. G. Shevchenko Scholarly Society. After the reunification of the western Ukraine with the Ukrainian SSR in 1939, Kripiakevich became professor and head of the subdepartment of history at the University of L’vov. In 1951 he became head of the Ukrainian history department of the Institute of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in L’vov; in 1953 he became the director of this institute.

Kripiakevich is the author of many works on the history of the Ukraine during the period of feudalism. His works written before the 1940’s were influenced by the Grushevskii school. In the Soviet period Kripiakevich published several scholarly works, mainly on the history of the people’s liberation war of 1648–54.
