Krivonogov, Petr Aleksandrovich 

Born Oct. 4 (17), 1911, in Sarapul, in the present-day Udmurt ASSR; died Aug. 22, 1967, in Moscow. Soviet battle scene painter. Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1955). Became a member of the CPSU in 1945.

From 1932 to 1938, Krivonogov studied under I. I. Brodskii and P. A. Shillingovskii at the Leningrad Academy of Arts. Beginning in 1939 he served in the Soviet Army, joining the M. B. Grekov Studio of War Artists. Krivonogov sought to convey the vast scope of the battles of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45 and the heroism of the Soviet soldiers. His works include The Bloody Battle at Korsun ‘-Shevchenkovskoe (1944), Victory (1948; State Prize of the USSR, 1949), At the Kursk Salient (1949), The Defenders of the Brest Fortress (1951), and Commissar of the Fortress (1967)—all are in the Central Museum of the Armed Forces of the USSR in Moscow. Krivonogov was awarded the Order of the Red Star and various medals. He was the first recipient of the M. B. Grekov Gold Medal (1967).
