Krnov

Krnov (kûr`nôf), Ger. Jägerndorf, city (1991 pop. 25,436), NE Czech Republic, in Moravia, on the Opava River, near the Polish border. An industrial center, it manufactures textiles (especially woolens) and musical instruments (notably organs). It is a summer resort and a winter sports area. The city was founded in 1221 and served as the capital of an independent duchy from 1377 to 1523. Krnov has an 18th-century castle and several fine churches and abbeys.

a city in Czechoslovakia, in the Czech Socialist Republic, North Moravia. Transportation junction at the confluence of the Opava and Opavica rivers. Population, 23,200 (1971). Industry includes machine building, textiles, wood products, and musical instruments.

This was the period that witnessed the foundation (1873) of the well-known firm of Rieger in Krnov (Jagerndorf).
In August 2005, a Holocaust memorial in Teplice was reportedly vandalized and, in September 2005, an NGO reported that several doors and windows were broken in a synagogue in Krnov and that several gravestones in a Jewish cemetery in Velky Pecin had been defaced with graffiti.
