Krupnov, Evgenii Ignatevich 

Born Mar. 16 (29), 1904, in Mozdok; died Sept. 29, 1970, in Moscow. Soviet archaeologist. Doctor of historical sciences (1961); professor (1964). Honored Scientist of the Chechen-Ingush ASSR (1964) and of the Kabarda-Balkar ASSR (1967). Member of the CPSU from 1952.

From 1929 to 1951, Krupnov was a research worker at the State Historical Museum in Moscow. In 1937 he began working at the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal works were devoted to the ancient and medieval archaeology and history of the Northern Caucasus and to the ethnogenesis of the Caucasian peoples. His work The Ancient History of the Northern Caucasus (1960) earned him the Lenin Prize (1963). Krupnov was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and several medals.
