Kubitschek de Oliveira, Juscelino

Born Sept. 12, 1902, in the city of Diamantina, in the state of Minas Gerais. Brazilian statesman and political figure.

Kubitschek is a physician by education. He was one of the leaders of the Social Democratic Party (a bourgeois party that existed between 1945 and 1966). From 1934 to 1937, Kubitschek was a deputy to the legislative assembly of Minas Gerais. From 1940 to 1945 he was prefect of the city of Belo Horizonte. From 1946 to 1950 he served as a deputy to the federal congress. He was governor of Minas Gerais from 1950 to 1955.

From January 1956 to January 1961, Kubitschek was president of Brazil. His policies were based on bourgeois economic nationalism and directed at carrying out a program of developing the economy while preserving “social peace.” After the reactionary military coup of 1964, Kubitschek was deprived of his political rights for a period of ten years.
