Kuching (k`chĭng), city (1991 pop. 277,346), capital of Sarawak, Malaysia, in W Borneo and on the Sarawak River. It is the largest city in the state and a river port. Sago flour and pepper are exported. It was founded in 1839 by James Brooke Brooke, Sir James, 1803–68, rajah of Sarawak on Borneo, b. India, of English parents. After active service in Burma (1825–26), he retired (1830) from the army of the East India Company.

. In the city are mosques, Buddhist temples, Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals, and a museum of Borneo folklore. The population is about two-thirds Chinese.

Kuching 

a city in East Malaysia in northwestern Kalimantan (Borneo), on the Kuching River (Sarawak River) near its influx into the South China Sea. Administrative center of Sarawak State. Population, 63,500 (1970). Kuching is a port (22 km from the river’s influx into the sea) accessible to ocean vessels and a trade center; it does primary processing of rubber, pepper, and copra. The city has a shipyard and docks.
