Kuleshov, Pavel Nikolaevich 

Born Aug. 15 (27), 1854, in Maloarkhangel’sk, present-day Orel Oblast; died Oct. 5, 1936, in Moscow. Soviet livestock specialist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1928).

Kuleshov graduated from the Kharkov Veterinary Institute in 1875 and from the Petrovskoe Agricultural Academy (now the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy) in 1879. After graduating from the academy he became an assistant professor in the subdepartment of descriptive zootechny and was soon assigned to study livestock breeding in Germany, France, Switzerland, Great Britain, and the USA. After returning to Russia (1882) he taught a course on descriptive zootechny at the Petrovskoe Agricultural Academy (he became a professor in 1889). He became a professor at the Moscow Institute of Zootechny in 1921.

Kuleshov’s main works dealt with the breeding of farm animals and with their external appearance and constitution. He bred a new type of fine-fleeced sheep, the New Caucasian Merino.

Kuleshov, Pavel Nikolaevich 

Born Dec. 13 (26), 1908, in the village of Kailyk, now Uiar Raion, Krasnoiarsk Krai. Soviet military commander; marshal of the artillery (1967). Member of the CPSU since 1939.

In the Soviet Army since 1926, Kuleshov graduated from an artillery school in 1929, from the F. E. Dzerzhinskii Artillery Academy in 1938, and from the Academy of the General Staff in 1941. In the Great Patriotic War (1941-45), after serving in the Main Directorate of Logistics of the Red Army, Kuleshov was commander of a task force of multiple rocket launchers on the Northwestern and Volkhov fronts from October 1941, deputy commander of multiple rocket launcher units from June 1943, and deputy chief of staff of the Red Army’s artillery from August 1944.

After the war Kuleshov was head of a department and deputy chief of the Dzerzhinskii Artillery Academy from 1946 to 1952. He held responsible positions in the National Air Defense and in the Ministry of Defense from 1952 to 1957. He was deputy commander in chief of the National Air Defense from 1957 to 1963. He has held responsible positions in the Ministry of Defense since 1963. Kuleshov has been awarded four Orders of Lenin, four Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Suvorov Second Class, the Order of Kutuzov Second Class, the Order of the Patriotic War First Class, the Order of the Red Star, and various medals.
