Kulibaev, Saliakh

Kulibaev, Saliakh Gabitovich 

(pseudonym, Saliakh Kulibai). Born July 2 (15), 1910, in the village of Tagirovo, in present-day Abzelilovskii Raion, Bashkir ASSR. Soviet Bashkir writer. Honored Cultural Worker of the Bashkir ASSR (1969). Member of the CPSU since 1947. Participant in the Great Patriotic War (1941–45).

In Kulibaev’s first collections of verses, the workers are the heroes (On the Mountain of Labor [1930]; The Breath of Cast Iron [1931]). The narrative poem The Tale of Ishimbai (1941) is devoted to the discoverers of Bashkir oil. Kulibaev writes about the heroism of Soviet soldiers in the collection About a Great Friend (1942) and in the narrative poem A Dzhigit From the Urals (1943). The narrative poems After the Battles (1949) and The Masters (1951) deal with the work of the people in peacetime. Kulibaev has also written dramas (the collection of plays Familiar Names, 1957) and prose works (the novellas Spring [1959], Different Paths [1961], Mountain Song [1965]). He has translated the works of A. S. Pushkin, M. lu. Lermontov, and I. A. Krylov into Bashkir. Kulibaev has been awarded the order of the Patriotic War Second Class and various medals.
