Kunsthistorisches Museum

(Museum of Art History), the major art museum of Austria, located in Vienna. The museum occupies a building combining elements of the Renaissance and Austrian baroque styles (1872–81, architects G. Semper and K. von Hasenauer). When it was established in 1891 its collections consisted mainly of acquisitions made by the House of Hapsburg. The museum has collections of Oriental and classical art, sculptures, decorative art, coins, medals, seals, weapons, carriages, and musical instruments. Of special significance are its section on Austrian culture and its extremely rich painting collection, with outstanding works by Giorgione, Tintoretto, Titian, Velazquez, Dürer, Bruegel the Elder (the best collection of his works in the world), Rembrandt, and Rubens.
