Kuopio

Kuopio (k`ôpēō), city (1998 pop. 86,203), Eastern Finland prov., central Finland, on Lake Kallavesi. Situated in a large forest region, its industries are based on timber. It is at the head of the Saimaa lake system and is a tourist and inland-navigation center. Kuopio was chartered in 1782. A university was founded there in 1972.

Kuopio 

a lääni (administrative unit) in Finland, in the northern part of the Lake Plateau. Area, 20,000 sq km. Population, 263,300 (1970). Its capital is Kuopio. Wooded hill-plain landscapes with many rivers and lakes predominate. Forest industries include logging, sawing, and woodworking. Copper sulfide ore is mined at Outokumpu and nickel ore at Katalahti. There is dairying and sheep raising, and wheat, oats, and fodder crops are grown.


Kuopio 

a city and port in Finland on Lake Kalla of the Saimaa lake system. It is the administrative center of the lää ni of Kuopio. Population, 65,000 (1970). A center of the woodworking industry, Kuopio produces lumber, plywood, spools, and wallboard. Other industries include chemicals, machine building, and food processing. Kuopio is a center of tourism and winter sports.

In a study carried out at the University of Kuopio in Finland, 50 subjects with slightly elevated cholesterol levels consumed an oat drink and spread fortified with plant stanol ester (plant stanols 9 grams/day) for 10 weeks or similar control products with no plant stanol ester.
According to a report in National Geographic News, the study was carried out by Surendra Pradhan, an environmental scientist at University of Kuopio in Finland.
Elevated cholesterol levels in midlife--even levels considered only borderline elevated--increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia later in life, according to researchers at Kaiser Permanente's Division of Research and the University of Kuopio in Finland.
