Wooded hill-plain landscapes with many rivers and lakes predominate. Forest industries include logging, sawing, and woodworking. Copper sulfide ore is mined at Outokumpu and nickel ore at Katalahti. There is dairying and sheep raising, and wheat, oats, and fodder crops are grown.
