Kupfer, David J. (1941– ) psychiatrist; born in New York City. In 1973 he joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, becoming chairman of psychiatry in 1983. His primary contribution was in the diagnosis and treatment of mood disorders, particularly sleep disorders and the biological causes of depression.
