Kupka, Frank or František (frän`tyĭshĕk kp`kä), 1871–1957, Czech painter, etcher, and illustrator. Kupka illustrated works by Reclus and Leconte de Lisle and an edition of Aristophanes' Lysistrata. In 1911 he joined the orphism orphism, a short-lived movement in art founded in 1912 by Robert Delaunay , Frank Kupka , the Duchamp brothers, and Roger de la Fresnaye. . He was one of the first painters to explore pure geometric abstraction. His decorative style was affected by the "machine esthetic" of the 1920s. Kupka is well represented in the Musée national d'Art moderne, Paris, and in the National Gallery, Prague.
