Kurbatov, Leonid Nikolaevich 

Born Jan. 2 (15), 1913, in Fergana. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1972.

Kurbatov graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnical Institute in 1936. From 1936 to 1940 and from 1956 to 1960 he worked at Leningrad State University. He worked at the Naval Medical Academy in Leningrad, from 1941 to 1956, and from 1956 to 1960, at the S. I. Vavilov State Optical Institute. He was also deputy director of a research institute. He has been a professor at the Moscow Physicotechnical Institute since 1961. Kurbatov’s principal works deal with the phenomena of absorption and photoconductivity and the recombination radiation of semiconductors. He has been in charge of the development of a number of photoelectric instruments and optical semiconductor quantum generators. He has been awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1970), the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
