Kuropatkin, Aleksey Nikolayevich (əlyĭksyā` nyĭkəlī`əvĭch k rŭpät`kĭn), 1848–1925, Russian general. He distinguished himself in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78. Made minister of war in 1898, he opposed the course that precipitated the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–5, but after its outbreak he took command of the troops in Manchuria.
