Kurts

    0.01 sec.
Kurts

(Karts), a dynasty that ruled over a feudal state in the Herat Oasis and the mountainous region of Ghur in Afghanistan from 1245 to 1389. Initially vassals of the Mongol Hulaguid dynasty, the Kurts achieved de facto independence when Hulaguid power weakened in the second quarter of the 14th century. The state attained its greatest flowering in the reign of Muizz-al-din (1331–70), when the Kurts subjugated nearly all of eastern Khorasan. In Herat, the capital of the Kurts, major construction projects were undertaken. Several Kurt rulers encouraged the development of literature.

The last Kurt rulers fought with the Sarbadarids. In the 1380’s the Kurt state, which was merely a loose military and feudal union, was conquered by Tamerlane and soon disappeared.
